Welcome from the Executive DirectorWhile we continue to make progress to reopen safely, FLCRC has provided creative and innovative programming. The Youth Ambassador Leadership Education (Y.A.L.E.) leaders were very active this quarter. Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ) launched another year of commitment to crime survivors’ healing and empowerment. We are thankful for the volunteers, FLCRC board members and our dynamic staff that have sustained us during this pandemic. Being flexible and responsive is key to successful engagement. In January, FLCRC welcomed 20 Y.A.L.E. students to another unprecedented opportunity to “Lead the Way through Service Learning.” On February 20th our Y.A.L.E. leaders volunteered in the aftermath of the Texas Winter Storm and they were a BIG part of restoring our community. Giving back in the community is a great experience and skillset for youth leaders to have! Thank you Fort Bend County Judge KP George for taking time to encourage our Y.A.L.E. leaders for volunteering. FLCRC hosted a virtual Black History Quiz Bowl Competition where Y.A.L.E. leaders showcased their knowledge of the African-American Arts, Education, Sports, Entertainment and History. NAACP Missouri-City and Vicinity Chapter President, Linda Coleman and Secretary, Edwina Clark shared their stories as Charter and Life members of the historic organization. Former Y.A.L.E. leader Erica vaccinated 70 people for COVID-19 as a part of her Nursing School program at Texas A&M University. New this year, FLCRC’s Spring Break Challenge was a creative, fun and successful activity for Y.A.L.E. students to reduce the stress associated with COVID-19 restrictions. Students posted over 50 photos displaying components of the Y.A.L.E. program and it was a very close race for 1st place. We are gearing up for the 2021 Summer Enrichment Camp on June 22nd thru 26th and hope to have young scholars throughout Fort Bend County participate. Sincerely, Ilene Harper, Ph.D. |
Y.A.L.E. Leaders Serve the CommunityAfter the wintery weather that devastated Texas in February, our Y.A.L.E. students stepped up and volunteered at a Fort Bend County Food and Water Distribution event on Saturday, February 20th. FLCRC is very proud of our student leaders being part of restoring the community during this difficult time. Service is one of the four key components of the Y.A.L.E. program, and the students certainly shined with their helpful and energetic spirit. Our special thanks to County Attorney Bridgette Smith-Lawson, FBISD Board Member Dr. Shirley Rose, Fort Bend County Judge KP George, and many other elected officials, parents and volunteers who took the time to encourage our youth leaders at this event. |
Y.A.L.E. Leaders Compete in Annual Quiz Bowl CompetitionOn Saturday, February 27th, Pre-Y.A.L.E. and Y.A.L.E. students competed in our annual FLCRC Black History Quiz Bowl Competition. The “Black” and “Red” teams did a fantastic job answering various trivia questions focused on key figures and events in Black History. Congratulations to the Red team on winning 1st place, and to the Black team for your fantastic effort! |
Y.A.L.E. Spring Break Challenge 2021Y.A.L.E. students recently participated in a challenge during their 2021 Spring Break. Their task was to post photos in the FLCRC app highlighting one of the four components of the Y.A.L.E. program (Character, College & Career, Leadership, and Service). Congratulations to Aiesha on winning the Challenge! She visited and posted pics from nine HBCU campuses during Spring Break. Thank you as well to all of our student participants for your awesome photo contributions! |

This new program seeks to prevent youth from entering the juvenile justice system, and is open to all youth, not just those deemed at-risk.
