Each year FLCRC awards five scholarships and two Pre-Y.A.L.E. awards to students. The first scholarship, the Hildred Jones-Drain Community Scholarship, is open to all Fort Bend County and surrounding areas high school graduating seniors to pursue their dream of earning a college degree. The top five finalists for the Hildred Jones-Drain Community Scholarship must attend an interview meeting on November 17th.

The Hildred Jones-Drain Community Scholarship Award

The Hildred Jones-Drain Community Scholarship Award will go to a high school student with outstanding service in the community. Hildred Jones-Drain was a pillar in the community; a mother, grandmother, faithful servant in the church, and motivator to everyone she came in contact with. Volunteering and giving back to the community is one of the most important things an individual can do. The characteristics of an outstanding senior for this award includes the following:

    1. Evidence of giving back and making a difference in the community
    2. Hard-working and successful in school
    3. Strong and effective leadership
    4. Enhanced Education through service learning
    5. Highly motivated and a problem solver

One recipient will receive a $500 Scholarship.


Hildred Jones-Drain was born on March 3, 1930 in Eldorado, Arkansas to the parents of the late Rev. Willie Fason and Mary Miller Fason. As a young girl, she grew up in Mansfield, Louisiana with her parents and sister, Marie. In 1946, she united in Holy Matrimony with the late Leander Jones. The Joneses had nine children. In addition to her nine children, Mrs. Jones raised four children from her husband’s previous marriage. Hildred later united in marriage to Ernest Drain, Jr.  After the second unsuccessful marriage, Hildred moved to Houston, Texas in 1978 and united with New Jerusalem Baptist Church where she remained until her death on May 14, 1992.

To apply for the remaining four scholarships and two Pre-Y.A.L.E. awards, students must be an active member of the Pre-Y.A.L.E. or Y.A.L.E. program.

Pre-Y.A.L.E. Emerging Leader Award

The Pre-Y.A.L.E. Emerging Leader Award honors a Pre-Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding leadership. The essence of an outstanding leader is a person with integrity; they are trustworthy and comfortable handling tough situations. Valuing everyone in the program and investing time to let the others know they are important to the mission are key traits. If you encounter this youth leader, you will see a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable youth who is genuine in their approach.

One recipient will receive a $150 VISA Gift Card.

Pre-Y.A.L.E. Service Learning Award

The Pre-Y.A.L.E. Service Learning Award will go to a Pre-Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding service. Service learning supports a culture of civic engagement through learning and investing in the community. By working in the community, students can enhance their knowledge, gain a better understanding of themselves, explore and develop ways to contribute to the community. This award highlights a self-confident youth with an enhanced commitment to public service.

One recipient will receive a $150 VISA Gift Card.

Y.A.L.E. Leader of the Year

The Y.A.L.E. Leader of the Year Award honors a high school junior or senior Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding leadership. The essence of an outstanding leader is a person with integrity; they are trustworthy and comfortable handling tough situations. Valuing everyone in the program and investing time to let the others know they are important to the mission are key traits. If you encounter this youth leader, you will see a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable youth who is genuine in their approach.

FLCRC Service Learning Scholarship

The FLCRC Service Learning Scholarship Award will go to a high school senior Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding service. Service learning supports a culture of civic engagement through learning and investing in the community. By working in the community, students can enhance their knowledge, gain a better understanding of themselves, explore and develop ways to contribute to the community. This award highlights a self-confident youth with an enhanced commitment to public service.

One recipient will receive a $500 Scholarship.

FLCRC Outstanding Senior Scholarship

The FLCRC Outstanding Senior Scholarship Award will go to a high school senior Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding leadership and service. The characteristics of an outstanding senior for this award includes the following:

 

  1. Hard-working and successful in school
  2. Positive attitude with good character
  3. Actively involved in school and the community
  4. Highly motivated and a problem solver
  5. Visible and effective leadership

 

One recipient will receive a $500 Scholarship.

FLCRC Outstanding College Student Scholarship

The FLCRC Outstanding College Student Award will go to a college level Y.A.L.E. ambassador for outstanding leadership and service. The characteristics of an outstanding senior for this award includes the following:

  1. Hard-working and successful in school
  2. Positive attitude with good character
  3. Actively involved in school and the community
  4. Highly motivated and a problem solver
  5. Visible and effective leadership

One recipient will receive a $500 Scholarship.

Scholarship and Award Amounts

A maximum of $500 per scholarship recipient and $150 for each Pre-Y.A.L.E. awards will be awarded.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the FLCRC Scholarships and Pre-Y.A.L.E. Awards, the applicant must:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States and a Texas resident.
  2. Be a high school graduating senior in the 2018-2019 school year for all FLCRC scholarships except the FLCRC Outstanding College Student Scholarship.
  3. Complete the Scholarship application.
  4. Provide a copy of official documentation of transcript and SAT/ACT score (report card only for Pre-Y.A.L.E. applicants).
  5. Provide a copy of acceptance letter or documentation of the applicant to attend a college or university. College students will submit official copy of the college transcript (high school and college students only).
  6. Complete and submit the application by 4:30pm on October 31, 2018. FLCRC will not accept or consider any incomplete or late applications. No exceptions will be made.
  7. All recipients must be present at FLCRC’s End of the Year Banquet on November 29, 2018, to receive the awards.
